November 2025

Updated: 12 minutes ago

Work across the month focused on preparing 30075 for final presentation and continuing the methodical overhaul of components from 30076. Early in the month the front of the shelter was adjusted to provide the necessary headroom for 30075 to be moved inside, after which flangeways were cleared and the locomotive was positioned under cover. Once secured, attention turned to paintwork, with filling, rubbing down and surface preparation carried out across successive sessions. Treatment of the smokebox with derusting paint was completed, and the boiler backhead area saw steady refitting, with the upper section of insulation positioned after the removal of the regulator handle and water gauges. Minor leaks around the vacuum ejector were investigated and the cause was identified, allowing a blanking cap to be prepared for the affected joint. General cleaning of the cab and fittings also took place, including work on brass plaques and the fabrication of new headboards.

Alongside this, various ancillary tasks were progressed. An improved firehole door shovel plate was prepared, a dedicated spanner was produced to allow maintenance of the small injector cone, and the connecting rods received attention, with cleaning and paint touch-ups carried out when conditions allowed. Lacquering of the exterior was postponed due to unsuitable temperatures, but preparatory work continued so the coating can be applied when feasible.

Work linked to 30076 also featured throughout the month. One of the side tanks was moved under cover and derusting began, with redundant pipe brackets removed and measurements taken for adjustments to the balancing pipe. In the workshop, methodical removal of studs from the steam manifold continued using controlled drilling. Space at the front of the shelter was arranged in readiness for receiving further components as required.

The PMV saw the introduction of an organised storage and cataloguing system for removed locomotive parts, creating a clearer method of tracking items through the restoration process.

As the month concluded, a reminder was circulated regarding ongoing collection of items for the planned tombola. A short report confirmed that scheduled work continued at Shillingstone, noting that lacquer could not be applied due to conditions but that cleaning, preparation and detailing tasks were progressed in its place.

Work has also been undertaken in anticipation of the Santa Special on Sunday the 14th December, where we hope to get 30075 into steam...
