February 2026

Earlier in the month the boiler washout on 30075 was completed following the internal inspection and flushing through of the boiler. The washout plugs have now been fully reinstated, including those within the smokebox area, with threads cleaned and seats checked prior to refitting to ensure sound sealing. Attention has continued on the gauge glasses, where progress has been made resolving alignment and sealing issues, with refitting ongoing. The steam dome lid is in the process of being installed, with preparation of mating faces and fixings carried out beforehand. The motion rods have been cleaned back, inspected and oiled to protect surfaces and ensure free movement ahead of further mechanical checks.

Ashdown was coupled to 30075 to allow the valve timing to be checked and adjusted. The locomotive was moved carefully up and down the line while observing the position of the valves relative to the steam ports within the steam chest, allowing fine adjustment to achieve correct coverage and timing. This work ensures that when steam is eventually raised, the valve events will be properly set. Beneath the coal bunker, the removable toolboxes have received an undercoat, applied by the family group, preparing them for finishing coats at a later stage.

On 30076, dismantling continues in a methodical manner. Components are being removed, labelled clearly, catalogued and placed into secure storage within the PMV to maintain traceability and protect parts during the overhaul. In the shelter, attention has focused on the side tanks. Sorting and assessment work has continued, with detailed measuring and marking undertaken to define areas requiring further cutting and repair. This preparatory work will guide the next stage of metalwork.

The main administrative development has followed a meeting with Matt Green of Invicta Railfreight and Phil Jacques, NDR Operations Manager. A procedure has now been agreed to renew Harry’s driver’s ticket, ensuring compliance with operational requirements and enabling us to move forward with the proposed Steam Up event on the weekend of 7th and 8th March. At present it appears unlikely that 30075 will be in steam for the event, although three traction engines have confirmed their attendance, ensuring activity on site. Volunteers will be very welcome on either or both days.
