We have during July dealt with the issues we expected to find during steam testing.
1. Cladding and Insulation:
- Boiler Barrel and Cab Cladding:
- Cladding for the back end of the boiler barrel (large cylindrical part of the locomotive where steam is produced) and inside the cab (the driver's compartment) was positioned.
- Rough edges were smoothed out using an angle grinder.
- Bolt holes were cleaned and re-threaded to ensure a good fit for bolts.
- This preparation means we are ready to start fitting insulation lagging and permanently fixing the cladding in place during the next work session.
- Firebox Cladding:
- The cladding sheets for the front sides of the firebox were found to be too short. Extra sections were welded on by Alan Whiffen to extend them.
- These extended sheets were then primed.
2. PMV (Parcels and Miscellaneous Van):
- An additional coat of lacquer was applied to the PMV.
- The axle box covers were painted.
- The rear side of the PMV was also lacquered.
- Final tidying up and painting of the letters on the axle box covers were completed.
- With these tasks done, the PMV overhaul is now considered complete!
3. Sander Pipes:
- The front right-hand sander pipe was fitted but found to be too short. It needs an additional length of pipe to be welded on to reach the correct length.
- The lower fixing brackets for the two front sander pipes were unbolted from the frames for improvement. These brackets were later returned with additional metal strips welded on for reinforcement.
4. Injector and Pipework:
- A cracked clack valve was boxed up and sent to a specialist company for cast iron welding repairs.
- The large injector with missing pieces was collected from Richard Vincent. A box was prepared, and the injector was packed for sending to Davis & Metcalfe for refurbishment.
- New gaskets were made for some of the pipework, and the connecting faces were cleaned to ensure a good fit.
5. Miscellaneous:
- Using the railway’s excavator, the locomotive's two water tanks were laid on their sides to create access for welding fixing bolts/studs.
- Continued progress was made with fitting insulation to the back end of the boiler barrel and the front end of the firebox.
