March ended on a positive note as we successfully raised steam on 30075 following weeks of steady preparation. While not a full steam test, it provided enough pressure to confirm both injectors are working and helped us identify a few remaining leaks that will need attention before we can go further.

The month began with the refitting of the side tanks. With help from John Drew and the P-way gang, the driver’s side went on smoothly, while the fireman’s side required a bit more manoeuvring but was eventually secured. Two bent studs were straightened using the oxy-acetylene torch, allowing the balance pipe to be reattached. Feed pipes to the injectors were resealed with rubber gaskets, eliminating earlier leaks, and loose pipe brackets were fixed. A leaking gauge glass was replaced, and the boiler and side tanks were filled.
On Tuesday 25th, a warming fire was lit in the firebox to bring the loco gently up to temperature ahead of the next day’s test. By Wednesday 26th, pressure had reached 90 psi, allowing us to check the injectors—which both operated as they should. A number of leaks were then found, most notably at the left-hand clack valve and right-hand cylinder. These were photographed and listed, and the fire was dropped to bring the test to a close.

The eight plank wagon saw continued progress too, with ongoing derusting, painting, and the preparation of new side panels. Metal strips were refitted along the top of the planks at one end, with the strip for the other end straightened and painted ready to go. The monthly family group session was well attended and contributed to door undercoating and frame treatment.
We'll be back on site next week to begin tackling the leaks, aiming for another steam test in the coming weeks. Paul is still collecting prizes for the tombola raffle at the Model Railway/Open Day on Saturday 5th April—any suitable donations would be appreciated.
